Remove the Thermostat Cover Remove the cover of your thermostat to start troubleshooting it. First, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker panel box. Then, loosen the screws holding the cover plate in place using a screwdriver.
2. Inspect the Thermostat Wiring Inspect the wiring on the base of the thermostat. Look for any loose, cut, or corroded wires. If you find any, clip them, strip them, and reattach them to the terminal screws. Once you're done, replace the thermostat body plate.
